Game three of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves was played in front of 2,626 fans Saturday at Grayson Stadium. Their was a 1.03 delay starting the game because of rain.
Savannah utilized strong pitching and power to defeat Rome 6-2.
Savannah starter, Robert Gsellman, pitched 7 innings, allowed 2 runs (1earned), on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. With the win, Gsellman is 3-3. Gnat relievers were superb-Akeel Morris pitched the 8th inning and struck out the side and Tim Peterson struck out two batters in the 9th inning.
Sand Gnats scored the first run of the game in the first inning when
Patrick Biondi,rf tripled and scored on a ground out.
Rome scored their first run in the 6th inning, Blake Brown,lf singled and reached second when the ball got away from the right fielder Biondi. Brown went to third on a ground out and scored on a sac fly. In the 7th inning Rome scored their final run.
Savannah unlished the power in the bottom of the 7th. Stefan Sabol,lf tripled to deep center field, slid into third, and scored when the Braves commited an error on the relay throw. The next batter, Champ Stewart,cf hit a home run over the left field fense, his first as a Sand Gnat, second as a professional.
Savannah sent 9 batters to the plate in the 9th inning, and scored 3 runs. An infield single with the bases loaded and two outs by Stewart platted 2 runs. The final Savannah run scored on a walk to Biondi with the bases loaded.
The final game of the series starts at 2:05 pm Sunday at Grayson Stadium.
