The first game of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Charleston RiverDogs was played Monday evening in front of 2,010 fans at Grayson Stadium. Savannah out hit Charleston 8-6 and won 5-2. Savannah took first place away from Charleston.
The Sand Gnats scored a run in the 4th inning when cKevin Plawecki singled, moved to third on a double by Stefan Sabol, and scored on a single by 1bCole Frenzel. In the 5th inning a throwing error to third by the Charleston pitcher allowed 2runs to score. With 2 outs in the 6th inning, Frenzel hit his third home run of the season over the right field fence. The final run for Savannah was scored in the 7th inning when cfEudy PiƱa tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
The RiverDogs scored two runs in the 9th inning. 3bDante Bichette Jr. singled and advanced to third on a double by 1bReymond Nunez. Both runners scored on a single by lfKelvin Deleon.
Frenzel was 2-3 with a run scored, 2 RBI's, HR and a single.
Starting Savannah pitcher, Garbiel Yona( W, 4-2), pitched 6 shutout innings, allowed 2hits, 1BB, and struck out 7. Reliever Brett Micchell struck out the two batters he faced in the 9th to earn his 8th save.
Game two of the series will be played Tuesday evening at 7:05 pm at Grayson Stadium.
