West Virginia Power 10 Savannah Sand Gnats 1

The final game of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the West Virginia Power was played in front of 1,388 fans Monday evening at Grayson Stadium.
The Power bats were hot as they banged out 17 hits and won  the game 10-1.
In the 3rd inning, West Virginia scored 3 runs on a 3-run home run by DH Stetson Allie over the left field fence. Allie hit his second home run in the game, a 2-run shot over the right field fence in the 7th inning. Allie now has 8 home runs tying him for the lead in homers in the South Atlantic League.
Savannah scored their run in the 8th when lf Stefan Sabol singled and scored on a double by 2b Chad Zurcher.
Luis Cessa (L, 2-1) started for Savannah, pitched  5 2/3innings, allowed 6 runs on 11 hits, 0 BB, and struck out 6.
Savannah played great this homestand, winning 6 out of 7 games.
The next home game is Wednesday at 7;05 pm against the Kannapolis Intimidators at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah Sand Gnats 3 West Virginia Power 2

Game three of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the West Virginia Power was played Sunday afternoon in front of 1,592  fans at Grayson Stadium.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the 9th, Savannah scored a run in the bottom of the 9th to win the game 3-2 and win their 6th home game in a row.
In the first inning, West Virginia scored 2runs on an error and three consecutive singles.
Sand Gnats scored their first run in the 3rd inning when cf Brandon Nimmo was hit by a pitch and reached second when the catcher made a bad throw in a pick off attempt. 3bCole Frenzel doubled to score Nimmo. Savannah scored their second run in the 8 th inning- Frenzel singled and later scored on a fielders choice.
Fans saw an exciting 9th inning. After two outs, c Kevin Plawecki was hit by a pitch and reached second on a single by 2b Jeff Reynolds. Frenzel singled and Plawecki slid head first into home to score the winning run.
The hitting star for Savannah was Frenzel who went 3-for-4 with a walk, 2RBI's and a run scored. lf Stefan Sabol, who made several good fielding plays in left field, was 2-for-4.
Sand Gnat starting pitcher, Matt Koch, pitched 3 2/3 innings allowed 2 runs( 1 earned), 4 hits and struck out one. The bullpen, Tim Peterson, Jake Kuebler, and Tyler Vanderheiden, pitched the final 5 1/3 innings. Vanderheiden won his first game of the season.
Both teams had 8 hits and both teams had one error.
The final game of the series will be played Monday evening at 7:05 pm at Grayson Stadium.



Savannah Sand Gnats 1 West Virginia Power 0

Game two of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the West Virginia Power was played in front of 2,969 fans Saturday evening at Grayson Stadium.
Fans saw a great game. Savannah pitchers were outstanding and they utilized strong defense ( infielders turned three double plays) Sand Gnats won the game 1-0 winning their 5th home game in a row. Both teams had 6 hits and their were no errors.
The only run in the game was scored by Savannah in the 5th inning. Lf Stefan Sabol led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on a single by 3b Yucary De La Cruz, and scored on an infield out.
Savannah catcher, Kevin Plawecki, was 2-for-3with two singles and he is now hitting .400.
Starting Savannah pitcher, Rainy Laray, (won, 3-1), pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings, allowed 5 hits and struck out nine. . Reliever Bret Mitchell, finished the game, gave up one hit in the 8th and struck out 2 in the 9th  inning to earn his second save of the season.
Game three of the series resumes Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah Sand Gnats 4 West Virginia Power 2

The first game of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the West Virginia Power was played Friday evening in front of 3,002 fans at Grayson Stadium. Savannah won 4-2, winning their fourth home game in a row.
The Sand Gnats scored three runs in the first inning sending 9 players to the plate. 2b Chad Zurcher led off with a hit and was forced out at second on a fielders choice. 1b Jayce Boyd singled. C Kevin Plawecki was hit by a pitch to load the bases. rf Greg Pron walked forcing in the first run. dh Jeff Glenn was hit by a pitch forcing in the second run. A single by ss Phillip Evans scored the third run.
In the 8 th inning 3b Yucary De La Cruz singled driving in the 4th run.
West Virginia scored both of their runs in the second inning.
Starting pitcher for Savannah, Steven Matz pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Winning his first game of the season, Julian Hilario pitched 2 scoreless innings, walked one and struck out two. Beck Wheeler got three outs (1-2-3) in the 9th to earn his first save of the season.
Zurcher had 2 singles and was 2-for-4.

Savannah Sand Gnats 7 Delmarva Shorebirds 2

The final game of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Delmarva Shorebirds was played in front of 1,717   fans Thursday evening at Grayson Stadium.
Savannah out hit Delmarva 13- 6  and won the game 7-2, sweeping the series.
Delmarva scored a run in the first inning and scored their final run in the 9th inning when 2b Torsten Boss hit a solo home run over the right field fence.
Savannah sored 2 runs in the 4th inning. DH Kevin Plawecki led off the inning with a home run over the left field fence. 3b Yucary De La Cruz and ss Philip Evans hit back to back singles and De La  Cruz scored from third base on a wild pitch.
The Sand Gnats scored 3 runs in the 5th inning, 1run in the 7th on 1b Jayce Boyd's home run over the left field fence, and scored their final run in the 8 th inning.
Starting Savannah pitcher, Gabriel Ynoa, won (2-2), pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowed 1 run on  3 hits, 1 BB and struck out 6.
Players with multiple hits for Savannah. 2b Chad Zurcher was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Boyd was 3-for-4  with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's( he is now hitting .429).  Plawecki was 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. De La Cruz went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs scored.
The Sand Gnats play West Virginia Power Friday evening at 7:05 pm at Grayson  Stadium.

Savannah Sand Gnats 9 Delmarva Shorebirds 3

Game two of the series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Delmarva Shorebirds was played Wednesday evening in front of 868 fans at Grayson Stadium.
Savannah capatilized on drawing 12walks from Shorebirds pitchers and had10 hits to win 9-3.
Delmarva scored a run in the first inning and scored 2 runs in the 4th to lead 3-0.
Savannah scored their first run in the 5th inning when with the bases loaded, c Kevin Plawecki hit a sac fly.
The floodgates opened for Savannah in the 6th inning when they sent 11 players to the plate, had 3 hits and received 5 base on balls and scored 6 runs. DH Jeff Glen led off the inning with a home run over the left field fence (he also singled in the inning driving in 2 runs).
In the 7 th, Savannah added 2 more runs.
Hitting stars for Savannah: 1b Jayce Boyd was 2-for-2with a double, 3 walks, and 2RBI's( he is now batting .411). DH Jeff Glenn went, 3-for-5 with his homer and drove in 3 runs. RF Eudy Piña was 3- for-4, with a double and 3 runs  scored.
With the win, Savannah starter, Matt Bowman, improved his record to 3-0, as he pitched 6 innings, allowed 3runs on 6 hits, struck out 4 and did not walk a batter.
Game three of the series will be played Thursday evening at 7:05 pm at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah Sand Gnats 9 Delmarva Shorebirds 1

The Savannah Sand Gnats played the Delmarva Shorebirds Tuesday evening in front of 1,291  fans at Grayson Stadiun. Savannah won the game 9-1. Both teams had 9  hits.
The Sand Gnats got off to a fast start in the first inning when 2b  Chad Zurcher led off with a walk and scored on a double by 1b Jayce Boyd.. A double by lf Greg Pron scored the second run.
In the 4th inning Savannah scored 3 runs. With 2 outs, 3b Cole Frenzel singled followed by a walk to dh Stefan Sabol. ssPhillip Evans doubled to score both runners. Rf Eudy Piña singled to score Evans.
Savannah scored a run in the 5th and 3runs in the 6th inning.
Delmarva scored their only run in the 8th inning. In the 9th, the Shorebirds had the bases loaded but did not score.
Starting Savannah pitcher, Luis Cessa, was masterful pitching 6 shutout innings. He allowed 5 hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out 7 batters. He is now (2-0) with an ERA of 1.02.
Leading hitters for Savannah: Boyd was 2-for-4, scored a run, doubled, drove in 2 runs and is now hitting .394. Piña was 2-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run.
Game 2 of the series resumes Wednesday at7:05 at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah Sand Gnats 8 Rome Braves 6

The Savannah Sand Gnats played the Rome Braves Saturday at Grayson Stadium in front of 3,095 fans. Savannah won 8-6. Rome outhit Savannah 13-6.( Four of the 6 hits were doubles for Savannah).
Rome scored their first run in the first inning on a single by lf Josh Elander driving in ss Jose Peraza who walked to start the game.
Savannah scored in the third when rf Eudy Piña walked and moved to second when the first baseman throw back to the pitcher went errant. The run scored on a sac fly by cf Brandon Nimmo.
In the 5th, Savannah scored 4runs. 3b Cole Frenzel singled and scored on a single by 2 b Yucary De la Cruz. Nimmo was hit by a pitch and a home rur over the left field fence by 1b Jayce Boyd scored 3 runs.
Rome scored they're  second run in the 6th inning on a home run by 1b Edison Sanchez.
Sand Gnats scored a run in the 6 th and 2 runs in the 7 th inning.
In the 7 th Rome got 6 hits( 4 of the hits were infield hits ), and scored 4runs.
The only left handed pitcher for the Sand Gnats, Steve Matz,  pitched 5 innings, allowed 1 unearned run on 4 hits, 1BB, and struck out 7.
First baseman, Cole Frenzel went 2-for-4 for Savannah, with a double and a run scored and one RBI.
The final game of the two game series will be played Sunday at 2:00 pm at Grayson Stadium.

Savannah Sand Gnats 7 Augusta GreenJackets 0

Game three of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta GreenJackets  was played in front of 1,050 fans Wednesday evening at Grayson Stadium. Savannah out hit Augusta 14- 9  and shutout Augusta 7-0.
In the second inning, of Stefon Sabol singled, stole second and scored on a single by dh Greg Pron. in the third inning Savannah scored their second run. After two outs in the 4th inning, 2b Yucary De La Cruz doubled and scored on a triple by rf Eudy Piña and Piña scored when the throw got away from the third baseman. In the 5th  inning, 1bJayce Boyd singled and scored on a double by c Kevin Plawecki.  lf Stefan Sabol followed with his first home run of the season over the left field fence making it 7-0
Starting Savannah pitcher, Matt Bowman pitched 6 shutout innings,allowed 4 hits, 1BB, and struck out 4. Bowman did a great job fielding , catching 2 line drives and fielding 3 grounder's hit to him. Reliever Jake Kuebler earned his first save pitching 3 shutout innings allowed 5 hits.
Sand Gnats had several hitting stars. c Kevin Plawecki had 3 doubles, was 3-for-5, scored a run and drove in a run( he is not batting .(.444). dhGreg Pron was 2-for-4 with 1RBI. lf Stefon Sabol went 2-for-4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 2RBI's. rfEudy Piña ,who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, was 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and a run scored.

Savannah Sand Gnats 7 Augusta GreenJackets 2

Game two of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta GreenJackets was played in front of  1,043 fans Tuesday evening at Grayson Stadium, with Savannah winning 7-2.
Savannah tied the game in the first when they scored a run when cfBrandon Nimmo was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by dh Kevin Plawecki.
In the second inning, lfGreg Pron walked and scored on a hit by 2bChad Zurcher to take a 2-1 lead. Savannah scored 2 runs in the 3rd, 1 run in the 7th, and 2 runs in the 8th.
Augusta scored their second run in the 7 th inning.
Sand Gnat starting pitcher, Luis Cessa, (won, 1-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 runs( 1 earned), 1BB, and struck out 5.
Sand Gnats out hit Augusta 9-8.
1b Jayce Boyd was 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored( he is now hitting .545), Plawecki was 2-for5 with a run scored and a double.3b Cole Frenzel was 2-for-4, with 2 doubles and an RBI  and a run scored.
Game three of the three game series will be played Wednesday evening at 7:05pm at Grayson Stadium.

Augusta GreenJackets 6 Savannah Sand Gnats 5

The first game of the three game series between the Augusta GreenJackets and the Savannah Sand Gnats was played in front of 2,002 fans Monday evening at Grayson Stadium.
Savannah had a 3-0 lead going into the 7th inning, when Augusta sent 11 batters to the plate and had 8 hits and scored 6 runs.
The Sand Gnats got off to a good start scoring 2 runs in the first inning. 2b Chad Zurcher led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by cf Brandon Nimmo. A single by 1b Jayce Boyd drove in the second run.
In the 5th inning with the bases loaded, 3b Cole Frenzel walked to score the 3rd run for the Sand Gnats.
Savannah scored their final two runs in the 7th inning.
Logan Taylor was sharpe starting  for Savannah, pitched 5 shutout innings, allowed 4 his, no walks ans struck out 5.
Leading hitters for the Sand Gnats, Zurcher hit 2 doubles, scored a run, drove in 2 runs and was 2-for-4.  Nimmo went 2-for-4, drove in 2 runs and scored a run.

Savannah Sand Gnats 12 . Rome Braves 3

Game two of the two game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves was played Friday night in front of 1,894 fans at Gayson Stadium. Savannah won 12-3.
Rome pitchers allowed 10 hits and walked 12 batters, while Gnats pitching was stellar. Starting Savannah pitcher, Gabriel Ynoa, pitched 5 shutout innings allowed 1 hit, walked 1, and struck out 6. The bullpen allowed 3 hits.
The Braves scored their three runs in the 6th inning. Savannah scored a run in the second inning, 5 runs in the 3rd, 2 runs in the 4th and 4 runs in the 6th inning.
Gnats players with multiple hits: c Kevin Plawecki, hit the first HR of the season( a line drive over the left field fence) went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2RBI's. ssPhillip Evans hit a triple and was 2-for-4 with 2RBI's and a run scored. 2b Chad Zurcher was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. cfBrandon Nimmo hit a triple and was 2-for-6, drove in 2 runs and scored a run.
Sand Gnats return to Grayson Stadium Monday, April 8th at 7:05  to play the Augusta Greenjackets.

Rome Braves 5 Savannah Sand Gnats 3

It was the home opener for the Savannah Sand Gnats Thursday evening at Grayson Stadium as they lost to the  Rome Braves 5-3.
It was a cold night for the 2,509 fans as they saw the Sand Gnats ralley for 3 runs in the 6th inning to take a 3-2 lead.
In the 5th inning, back to back singles by 2b Chad Zurcher and cf Brandon Nimmo and both runners advanced on  a curve ball in the dirt wild pitch. Two runs scored oa a double by 1b Jayce Boyd, who advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by 3b Cole Frenzel.
Starting Sand Gnat pitcher, Matt Bowman, pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up 2 earned runs on 7 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5(3 in the first inning).
For the game, Rome had 12  hits and Savannah had 8 hits.
Leading hitters for Savannah, Boyd had 2 singles and a double and was 3for 4. Nimmo had two singles and was 2for3.
Game two of the two game set is Friday at 7:05pm at Grayson stadium.

Media Day

It was media day Tuesday afternoon at Grayson Stadium as the Savannah Sand Gnats returned to start the 2013 season with the home opener set for Thursday at 6:30 pm.
Players returning from last years team: outfielder Greg Pron and infielders Cole Frenzel and Yucarybert De La Cruz.
The Mets number one draft pick,(13th overall  pick)Brandon Nimmo, is being interviewed by Mack of Mack's Mets.
